The CEF is delighted to invite you to its 17th Annual Conference. Main conferences will take place in the Alexandre-Taché pavillon at Université du Québec en Outaouais (direction) on May 2nd and 3rd, 2024. A day of training workshops will precede the Conference on May 1st.
Would you like to share the results of your research project and discuss with researchers in your study area? Would you like to develop your network in the field of forest science? Would you like to see your colleagues in the flesh? The CEF Annual Conference is open to all CEF members and partners (potential or actual). This is an extraordinary opportunity to interact with members of the forest science research community in Quebec. It is open to all members of the CEF, its partners, the broader scientific community and the general public.

Invited Speaker
Damien Bonal is Director of Research at INRAE (National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment), based in the SILVA Joint Research Unit in Nancy, France. For 25 years, he has been carrying out research in the ecophysiology of trees and forest ecosystems, in tropical forests and mixed temperate forests. He lived for 13 years in French Guiana (1996-2009), where he installed the "Guyaflux" flow tower device which has continuously measured the exchange of greenhouse gases between the forest and the atmosphere for 20 years. He is particularly interested in the diversity of the response of tree species and forest ecosystems to soil drought, in the context of climate change. He is co-author of 160 peer-reviewed articles on both tropical and temperate forests.
Research-Indigenous collaboration to combat climate change and biodiversity loss
The native territories of Quebec's boreal forest are home to some of the last large tracts of old-growth forests south of the northern limit, ecosystems rich in biodiversity that have been storing large quantities of carbon for hundreds of years. Concerned about the fate of these last unmanaged forests, several Indigenous communities and research teams are collaborating to assess the role of conserving carbon-rich ecosystems in combating climate change and protecting biodiversity. In this panel discussion, participants from the Indigenous and research communities demonstrate how collaboration offers great opportunities to address the multiple crises facing forest ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
This event, free and open to the general public, will take place in the Grande Salle of UQO's Alexandre-Taché Pavilion (Gatineau) on May 1st at 7:00 p.m., following the Happy Hour. Come one, come all!

Workshops will be held in the language of the workshop title.
All workshops (except the field trip) will take place in the Alexandre-Taché Pavilion of the Université du Québec en Outaouais.
You must select the workshops you wish to participate in when registering online. Please note, the payment system does not allow you to choose only the second part of a workshop if you register for the first part, and vice versa. So make sure to register for both parts if you opt for a two-part workshop.
A lunch box, included with registration, will be served to all workshop participants except those who will have registered after April 23.
The poster session will take place thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Great Hall and the corridors of the A wing of the Alexandre-Taché pavillon. The posters will be on display throughout the Conference.
The competition for the best posters is reserved for student members of the CEF, and only these posters will be numbered for voting. This is a public vote. Ineligible posters are indicated by the code NM/NE, which stands for Non-Member/Non-Student. You'll find a ballot in your badge. Votes will be collected in a specially marked box.

Code of Conduct
The organizing committee of the Centre for Forest Research Annual Conference is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for its participants, speakers, partners, staff and volunteers to ensure an enjoyable experience for all during the event.
As we discuss science from our different perspectives, cultures and knowledge bases, we want to foster an open and inclusive environment for all participants. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone feels welcome to participate, speak up, ask questions and engage in conversation. We expect members to be intentional and thoughtful in their interactions to ensure that the event reflects a culturally safe environment for all.
We will not tolerate harassment of any kind at this conference. Inappropriate behavior or speech will not be accepted in any part of the conference, including lectures, workshops, roundtables, and social events. The organizing committee will review allegations of any such behavior on a case-by-case basis. At the discretion of the committee, those who violate these rules could be expelled from the conference without refund and prohibited from participating in future conferences.
If you have any questions or have witnessed any inappropriate behavior, please inform the EDI committee (Elise Filotas, Jeremy Fraysse ou Marta Alonso-Garcia). All information submitted will be treated with discretion. Members of the EDI committee will seek relevant facts from the concerned parties, via private discussions with those who report and those accused of the behavior. Additional conversations could be conducted with those who have witnessed the situation.

Call for Posters and Presentations
The Call for Posters and Presentations is over!
The deadline was February 16th 2024
The CFR encourages members to present on all the themes from the 4 research axes of the CFR and also on emerging themes at the CFR such as: health, society, the arts, geomatics and remote sensing. Always obviously in connection with the forest.
The proposals received will be evaluated by the scientific committee according to the following criteria:
1. Relevance of the subject in relation to the themes of the CFR
2. Clarity and structure of the proposal
3. Progress of the student project
4. Partner or associate member project
All CFR members are invited to present the results of their research as an oral presentation or poster. Only abstracts presenting results will be accepted for oral presentations. Submissions of CFR student, post-doctoral and partners research projects that are well underway will be given priority by the selection committee.
Abstracts should be limited to between 250 and 300 words in the language in which the presentation will be done (English or French). Abstracts not respecting these conditions will be refused.
The deadline for submitting a proposal is February 16th, 2024.
Specific instructions for oral presentations - Oral presentations should be 15 minutes in length, followed by 5 minutes of questions. Slides should be in PDF or Microsoft PowerPoint format. If you have video or other animation, make sure that the presentation is compatible with a Windows PC. Also, because we cannot guarantee access to the Internet, it is important that you save a copy of your presentation on a USB key. Therefore online presentations system should not be used (Prezi and others). Participants will be able to upload their presentation during the break before their session, via the volunteer AV technician who will manage the computer.
Finally, to ensure that the sessions run smoothly, NO internet connections will be permitted during the presentation. Mac users should ensure that they have a version of Office that is compatible with Windows PC.
Specific instructions for posters - Posters should be either:
in LANDSCAPE format with maximum dimensions of 48 inches wide by 36 inches high (122 cm par 91.5 cm) or
in PORTRAIT format with maximum dimensions of 24 inches wide by 36 inches high (61 cm par 91.5 cm).
Read the following article in Nature to improve the quality of your poster.
Please write to Stéphane Daigle if you have questions about posters and presentations.
The first day of the Conference (Wednesday May 1) will this year be dedicated to training workshops.
We therefore solicit your contribution. Whether you are a regular researcher, associate researcher, professional, postdoctoral fellow, master's or doctoral student or even non-member of the CFR , you can offer a one-day or half-day training workshop.
R packages, programming, specialized software, theory in ecology, field techniques, etc. Practical and theoretical training will be accepted. Anything that can be taught in 4 or 8 hours and that is of interest to CFR members will be considered. In case the number of proposals exceeds the number of available rooms, a committee will select the most interesting/popular ones. We will try to accommodate as many workshops as possible. For computer-type workshops, we should have a couple of computer labs available. We will reserve those for workshops involving licensed software. For workshops involving open source software, we prefer participants to bring their own laptop with the software already installed. This makes holding a computer type workshop possible in conventional classrooms.
The persons in charge of the selected workshops will not have to pay the registration fees for the Symposium. A maximum of two persons per workshop will be able to take advantage of this offer.
The deadline for submitting a training workshop is February 16th, 2024
Please write to Pierre Racine if you have questions about the workshops.
