Awards from the CEF

To improve the training of our graduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D. level, and Post-Doctorates), training courses, internships and awards for participating in international congresses are granted to the majority of our students. We offer internships outside of Quebec to all doctoral students desiring such experience. Funds for these activities are offered through the CEF financial aid program for conferences and internships.

Financial Aid Program of the CEF for dissemination of research and internships

This program seeks to help students participate (through posters or oral presentations) in international conferences, advanced courses or internships. Only requests totalling more than $500 of admissible expenditures are eligible. To be considered, the requests may be made to the contact person at your pole before the following deadlines. Grants from the CEF thus encourage participation in costlier conferences. For less expensive conferences, you should speak directly to your adviser.

Request form  for conferences, advanced courses and internships.

Students can use the cumulative allowance for conferences and advanced courses for linguistic revision of manuscripts written in English when submitting scientific papers. Write directly to the contacts of your university for this service.

Contacts - Individuals to whom you should forward your application:

Please note that the rules of the program as well as the amounts vary from one pole to another.

The Sherbrooke pole has a separate financial aid programme for conferences and internships that is administered by the faculty of the student registered at the University of Sherbrooke, please contact your supervisor for more information.

Accessibility to financial aid - All full-time students registered in a graduate program under the supervision (or joint supervision) of a professor-researcher, who is a regular member of the CEF, are admissible to the financial program until the date that their final thesis or dissertation is submitted. Moreover, one financed training course must be carried out prior to the initial thesis or dissertation submission.

Advisor financial support - All student-researchers must receive financial support from their advisor with respect to expenses not supported by this program. This approval is recognized either by the signatures of the applicant and his/her director on each request, or by an electronic authorization of the director, which is sent to the person in charge of the pole concerned.

Rules specific to the training courses - The student-researcher registered for a master’s degree can be only financed for one training course within the CEF, i.e., in a laboratory of a regular member of the CEF. The student-researcher registered in a doctoral program can make a demand for an internship award without such restrictions.

Maximum amount attributable - Each scholarship request must represent a maximum amount of 60% of the total eligible amount (total amount of the request adjusted after the evaluation of the request). The total eligible amount must be greater than $500 for each request except for linguistic revision.

Methods of awarding scholarships - All requests that are received are taken into account and assigned to one of three categories:

  • Conference with a presentation, an advanced course or linguistic revision - $900 maximum for the duration of masters studies $1800 maximum for the duration of doctoral or post-doctoral studies
  • External internship - Only one request for the entire duration of a doctorate, with a $3000 maximum
  • Intra-center internship - Only one request for the entire duration of a doctorate, with a $2000 maximum. Only one request for the entire duration of a masters, with a $500 maximum (a justification of the relevance of the internship must be attached to the request).

Admissible expenditures - Admissible expenditures include costs of transport, lodging and registration for conference/training course. Expenses for food are not admissible. Each demand for a bursary must include allowable expenses totaling at least $500. This expenditure is revised by the committee at the time the request is evaluated.

Calculation of expenses - Calculation of living expenses is carried out according to the standards of the institution where the student is registered. The students are required to minimize their expenditures, for example, by making early airline ticket reservations in economy class, and lodging in the most affordable accommodations that are available.

In the case of internships, it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that expenses for which he/she is requesting reimbursement are refundable in agreement with university standards.

Advances - The student-researcher can make a request for an advance, after informing his/her research advisor.

Expense report - The student to whom a grant is award is required to complete an expense report upon his/her return from the conference or internship to allow the transfer of funds. The amount that will be given back to the student is defined according to the expenses that have been presented (with supporting documents) in the report, to the maximum allowable limit.

Reports, volunteers - Students who have merited an award will have to contribute in various other ways to activities of the CEF. All the students who will have received a award will have to write a report regarding their participation in the conference. This report will be published in the Off the cuff section of the CEF Web site.

FQRNT International internship program

Please note that the international internship program has changed as the FRQNT is now associated with Mitacs via the research grants its Globalink program  to promote the international mobility of students whose research activities are part of the scientific programming of the strategic groups funded by the FRQNT. This scholarship is an additional tool made available to strategic groups and networks to strengthen their action and on the international scene. You will find information about this contest below.

Therefore, the CEF will allocate international internship grants to students in master's and doctoral programs, under which certain conditions apply.

Please note that program rules for international internships have been reviewed.

The Globalink FRQNT-Mitacs research scholarship is intended for graduating undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students enrolled full-time in a university in Quebec or outside Canada and who have met the requirements of their program of study as well as to postdoctoral fellows. Undergraduate applicants pursuing their first post-secondary degree must have completed their second year of study prior to departure. All applicants enrolled in an undergraduate program must have maintained a “B” average in the two most recent semesters prior to application. This average may be cumulative over the two periods.

  1. For students enrolled full-time in a Quebec university and postdoctoral fellows in Quebec
    • Have Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status of Canada.
    • Be a resident of Quebec within the meaning of the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
    • Be a member of the CEF strategic grouping
  2. For students enrolled in a university outside Canada and in a Mitacs partner country
    • Hold the study permit or visa necessary for the duration of their internship in Quebec.
    • Not be registered in joint supervision at a university in Quebec. For joint supervision students, consult the rules governing the Frontenac program.
    • Doing the internship in the CFR

  • Scholarship value (living expenses): max. $6,000
  • Duration of the internship: with a minimum duration of 12 and a maximum of 24 weeks.
  • Location of the internship: The internship must be carried out outside Canada and in a Mitacs partner university for students registered in a Quebec university and for postdoctoral fellows from Quebec. The internship must be carried out in Quebec for students and postdoctoral fellows from outside Canada.
  • Period of validity: The internship must start no later than one year after receipt of the scholarship confirmation letter.
  • Limitation: Students registered in joint supervision with a foreign university cannot benefit from these scholarships to go there and stay in one or other of their home universities. Postdoctoral fellows holding a FRQNT postdoctoral research grant and already having an internship location outside Quebec as well as postdoctoral fellows benefiting from a merit scholarship for foreign students are not eligible.

Students who submit a request must send it to the CEF coordinator (Luc Lauzon, ) no later than January 15, 2021. Since the program is now managed by Mitacs, applications must follow their rules for submission. As the requirements are more complex than in the past, we strongly recommend that directors provide proper guidance to candidates in writing their application.

Specific information on how to submit an application can be found in the Globalink Fellowship Program Guide – In Canada Δ. All documents must be submitted in English or French. Please number your files as indicated in the Application Package section.

Applicants must complete and submit to the CEF the following 3 Mitacs forms:

Questions about forms, required documents and program requirements should be directed to:

Marianne Groleau, PhD, MBA
Spécialiste, développement des affaires | Mitacs-UQAM
514-236-4100 ||

Each request must also include:

  • the candidate's academic record (transcripts of university studies).
  • the student's FQRNT PIN.
  • The correspondence of the internship project with the research program of the CEF as well as its insertion in the international actions of the CEF.

Step 1 - Applications are assessed by the CEF based on the following criteria:

  • The excellence of the candidate's academic record and research aptitude (50 points).
  • The correspondence of the internship project with the scientific program of the CEF (25 points).
  • The insertion of the internship project in the international actions of the CEF (25 points). Describe how this internship could facilitate or increase CEF's future international collaboration opportunities.

Step 2 - Applications selected by the CEF are evaluated by Mitacs.

Candidates are selected by the CEF (maximum 4) who recommend them to Mitacs. Mitacs makes the final decision on which scholarships to award under this scholarship program. The internship must start no later than one year after receipt of the scholarship confirmation letter.
