Le professeur Arseneault s'intéresse aux interactions entre les perturbations (feux, coupes) et les changements climatiques et à leurs impacts à long terme sur la forêt boréale et la forêt tempérée. Il mène actuellement des recherches sur le régime de chevauchement des feux dans la taïga, sur la dynamique millénaire des forêts riveraines, sur le transfert de débris ligneux à travers les interfaces riveraines et sur la dynamique du réservoir de débris ligneux aquatiques. Il développe des séries dendrochronologiques millénaires dans la zone boréale. Il travaille à reconstituer l'historique de transformation des forêts tempérées du Québec sous l'influence des coupes depuis le début du XIXe siècle.

La 27e édition des découvertes de l'année de Québec Science souligne dans son Top-10 les travaux de Victor Danneyrolles (chercheur postdoctoral à l'UQAR) et son directeur Dominique Arseneault (UQAR). Intitulée "Reconstituer la forêt québécoise du passé", cette recherche s'est plongée dans les rapports des arpenteurs des 19e et 20e siècles, pour reconstituer l’évolution de la forêt québécoise. L’influence des perturbations humaines y est évidente. C’est Victor Danneyrolles qui a scruté l’énorme quantité de données et l’a convertie en une carte forestière du sud du Québec, de la Gaspésie à l’Outaouais. Une sorte de photo satellite du passé, montrant la forêt d’autrefois, où chaque couleur représente une essence forestière. Le tout a fait l’objet d’une publication dans Nature Communicationsen mars 2019. Constatation : la forêt a changé radicalement. Les résineux, notamment, ont écopé. «Avant 1900, explique-t-il, il y avait énormément de sapins, d’épinettes et de thuyas. La forêt d’aujourd’hui, où l’on trouve beaucoup d’essences tolérantes aux perturbations, surtout l’érable et le peuplier, n’est pas très représentative de ce qu’elle a déjà été.»
