PRÉSENTATION

Je suis membre régulier du CEF, du Centre d'études Nordiques (CEN) . J'ai aussi été membre de la Chaire de recherche industrielle CRSNG-Produits forestiers Anticosti (2001 à 2017). Le programme de recherche que je poursuis couvre différents aspects de l'écologie appliquée des milieux terrestres. Il se situe à l'interface de l'écologie animale, de l'écologie forestière et de la gestion des ressources naturelles. Plus spécifiquement, mes travaux sont centrés sur le rôle des ongulés nordiques dans la dynamique des écosystèmes forestiers et inversement sur les réponses des populations animales aux variations dans la disponibilité et la qualité des ressources. L'un des défis de l'étude des interactions entre les plantes et les herbivores consistent à aborder le problème tantôt du point de vue de l'herbivore, tantôt du point de vue de la plante et ce à différentes échelles d'analyse (individu, population, communauté, paysage). Mes travaux combinent une approche expérimentale permettant d'investiguer les relations entre la densité d'herbivores et l'état des écosystèmes forestiers, des expériences naturelles à plus grande échelle et la modélisation des systèmes cerf-forêt.

RÉALISATIONS RÉCENTES

Mon programme de recherche vise à établir comment les relations entre les espèces de niveaux trophiques distincts influencent leur composition, leur abondance et leur distribution sous l’effet de stresseurs environnementaux. Au cours des dernières années, mon équipe a développé les axes de recherche suivants:

  1. Évaluation du rôle des perturbations par les grands herbivores forestiers en combinaison avec d’autres perturbations naturelles sur la dynamique de régénération des forêts boréales;
  2. Compréhension des interactions trophiques indirectes entre les grands herbivores et les plantes modulées par la présence d’espèces compagnes;
  3. Influence des changements climatiques sur l’habitat des herbivores nordiques et rétroactivement comment ceux-ci affectent les réponses de la végétation.

Nos progrès s’appuient sur la manipulation expérimentale et l’évaluation du broutement par le cerf de Virginie et l’orignal en forêt boréale. Dans les écosystèmes arctiques et subarctiques, nous réalisons depuis peu la pertinence de considérer le rôle des herbivores dans la réponse de la végétation aux effets des changements climatiques. Nous avons récemment complété une expérience de simulation des effets à court et moyen termes des changements climatiques et du broutement par le caribou sur les arbustes érigés de la toundra. Nous poursuivons les travaux sur l’habitat du caribou en simulant les effets de l’augmentation de l’enneigement et de l’ombrage imposé par le développement des arbustes sur le développement des ressources alimentaires estivales du caribou migrateur.
