THÈMES DE RECHERCHE

Mes recherches visent à comprendre et à quantifier la croissance des peuplements forestiers de façon à mettre au point des traitements sylvicoles et des modèles de simulation aptes à prévoir les changements temporels de certaines composantes clés comme la production ligneuse, la mortalité des arbres, et la composition et la structure des peuplements. Mes travaux se déroulent autant en forêt boréale qu’en forêt feuillue, et autant dans les peuplements de structure équienne qu’inéquienne. Je porte une attention particulière à la transition des peuplements de structure équienne vers des peuplements de structure inéquienne, ce qui peut impliquer des changements de composition causés par la mortalité d’arbres dominants et des changements de dynamique de croissance entre les arbres dominants et dominés. L’étude de cette transition est importante pour mettre au point des traitements sylvicoles visant à reproduire les effets des perturbations naturelles secondaires impliquées dans le développement et le maintien des vieilles forêts. Or, les vieilles forêts sont souvent identifiées comme une composante clé de l’aménagement durable de plusieurs territoires forestiers puisqu’elles sont convoitées par l’industrie forestière tout en étant associées à des éléments particuliers de la biodiversité végétale et animale.

RÉALISATIONS RÉCENTES

Au cours des dernières années, plusieurs de mes travaux de recherche se sont déroulés sur la Côte-Nord où le climat froid et humide favorise la transition et le maintien de vieilles forêts boréales. À l’aide d’une chronoséquence après feu de plus de 1000 ans, nous avons pu étudier les changements temporels de la quantité de bois mort sur pied, de la productivité des forêts, de l’accumulation de matière organique sur le sol, de l’allocation des arbres à la croissance racinaire et de la biodiversité végétale du sous-bois. Nous avons aussi comparé les effets des coupes forestières et des feux de forêt en termes de productivité ligneuse, de composition forestière et de diversité des bryophytes, et nous avons incorporé les feux et les coupes à des calculs de la possibilité ligneuse de façon à tester différents scénarios d’atténuation des impacts de la récolte forestière sur le caribou boréal.

Parallèlement à ces travaux en forêt boréale, des efforts de recherche ont aussi été consentis dans des forêts feuillues et résineuses du sud du Québec. Ainsi, des analyses de la vigueur des arbres, de la qualité des tiges et de la valeur des bois nous ont permis de mieux cibler les arbres à abattre lors des coupes de jardinage dans les forêts dominées par l’érable à sucre ou le chêne rouge. De plus, des recommandations sur l’application de l’éclaircie commerciale en forêt résineuse ont pu être formulées à l’aide d’une analyse spatiale de la croissance des arbres.
