THÈMES DE RECHERCHE

Les mouvements sont inhérents aux processus de sélection de l’habitat et de dispersion, et ont ainsi un effet prépondérant sur la structure et la dynamique des populations. Ceci est particulièrement vrai en paysages fragmentés, où les populations risquent davantage l’extinction et où les mouvements des individus peuvent assurer la persistance de ces populations sous la forme d’une métapopulation. Malgré l’importance des mouvements pour l’écologie des populations, l’étude des processus de dispersion demeure l’un des champs de recherche les plus négligés. Cette négligence est associée aux efforts soutenus qu’il faut déployer pour suivre les déplacements des individus sur de grandes distances et durant des périodes prolongées. Les taux d’émigration et d’immigration entre les îlots d’habitats demeurent donc souvent inconnus ou sont estimés avec biais et/ou peu de précision, ce qui limite la portée des études démographiques et des analyses de viabilité des populations.

L’objectif principal de mes recherches est de développer des outils de modélisation (e.g., simulations informatiques spatialement explicites et basées sur l’individu) permettant d’inférer la dynamique des mouvements de dispersion à partir de comportements individuels qui auront été observés à l’échelle locale. À ce titre, l’étude de l’influence de la composition et de la configuration des paysages sur les déplacements des individus, de même que sur les causes entraînant les individus à quitter ou à coloniser un territoire donné (e.g., distribution spatiale, disponibilité et qualité des territoires; succès reproducteur; attraction conspécifique), est centrale à mon programme de recherche. Quoique certains des travaux ayant cours dans mon laboratoire sont axés sur la modélisation et l’exploitation de systèmes d’information à référence spatiale, la majorité d’entre eux requièrent des observations sur le terrain. Ces observations prennent souvent la forme d’expériences via lesquelles il est possible de standardiser la motivation des individus à se déplacer au sein de paysages possédant des caractéristiques particulières.

Pratiquement, mes recherches portent sur la dispersion des oiseaux forestiers et des oiseaux associés aux milieux agricoles traditionnels (pâturages et cultures de petites superficies). Ceci est justifié du fait que (1) les oiseaux possèdent une histoire naturelle relativement bien connue; (2) il est techniquement possible de suivre leurs déplacements et leur démographie; (3) les populations de plusieurs espèces ont décliné ou montrent une structure perturbée face à la perte et à la fragmentation de leurs habitats; et (4) malgré leur vagilité en périodes de migration, les oiseaux forestiers sont contraints dans leurs mouvements par les milieux ouverts créés par la foresterie, l’agriculture et l’étalement urbain. Il demeure que je suis ouvert à ce que mes étudiant(e)s s’intéressent à la dispersion chez les amphibiens, des organismes dont la mobilité est probablement faible et qui, de surcroît, sont très sensibles à la perte et à la fragmentation des divers types d’habitats nécessaires à la complétion de leur cycle vital.
