BIOGRAPHIE

Professeur titulaire au Département de sciences biologiques de l'Université de Montréal et chercheur à l'IRBV, au Jardin botanique de Montréal.

Il fut conservateur du Jardin botanique de la Ville de Montréal de 1975 à 1996 et directeur de l'IRBV (Institut de recherche en biologie végétale, affilié à l'Université de Montréal et au Jardin botanique de la Ville de Montréal) de 2002 à 2006.

Détenteur d'un baccalauréat es arts du Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf de Montréal, d'un baccalauréat en sciences biologiques de l'Université de Montréal, d'une maîtrise en écologie de l'Université McGill (Montréal, Québec) et d'un doctorat en conservation des ressources naturelles de l'Université Cornell (Ithaca, New York).

Ses travaux de recherche et ses publications scientifiques sur la végétation du sud-ouest du Québec et de Terre-Neuve lui ont valu, en 1990, le prix Michel-Jurdant en sciences de l'environnement, accordé par l'ACFAS et subventionné par Hydro-Québec. Il a publié "Journal de voyage en Chine. Une famille Québécoise au Pays du Milieu", aux éditions du Méridien, en 1992, et "Le Jardin botanique de Montréal, Esquisse d'une histoire", avec la collaboration de Francine Hoffman, aux éditions Fides, en 1998.

Il fut le vice-président du conseil d'administration de l'Hôpital Sainte-Justine (CHU mère-enfant), de 1995 à 2004 et un des six commissaires de la Commission d'étude scientifique, technique, publique et indépendante, chargée d'examiner la gestion des forêts du domaine de l'État (Commission d'étude sur la gestion de la forêt publique québécoise) , présidée par M. Guy Coulombe. Les travaux se sont échelonnés sur un an et le rapport a été remis en décembre 2004.

DISTINCTIONS

En 2005, l'ABQ (Association des biologistes du Québec) lui a décerné le prix Georges-Préfontaine.

THÈMES DE RECHERCHE

L'évolution des écosystèmes agro-forestiers péri-urbains.

Projet en collaboration avec Gérald Domon , École d'architecture du paysage, Faculté d'Aménagement de l'Université de Montréal et Jacques Brisson, IRBV, Sciences biologiques, l'Université de Montréal.

Les diverses pratiques agricoles ou forestières ont non seulement profondément modifié le couvert végétal naturel, mais ont aussi transformé les relations dynamiques entre les écosystèmes résultant dans une plus grande hétérogénéité spatiale du paysage. La programmation de recherche vise à analyser la dynamique spatio-temporelle de ces écosystèmes en intégrant l'expertise de chercheurs en écologie des communautés végétales, en aménagement du territoire, en écologie des populations, en géomatique et en analyses spatiales. Dans le cadre de cette programmation, les projets sont effectués dans le Haut-Saint-Laurent, à l'extrémité sud-ouest du Québec. La maîtrise intégrée de la végétation.

Projet en collaboration avec Jacques Brisson, IRBV, Sciences biologiques, l'Université de Montréal.

Dans les emprises de transport d'énergie, la maîtrise intégrée de la végétation constitue une approche prometteuse pour contrôler la végétation indésirable et favoriser le maintien ainsi que le développement de communautés végétales plus résistantes à l'envahissement des arbres. Des études d'écologie théorique et pratique sont effectuées pour développer des outils de gestion s'inspirant du développement durable.
