DRAA-BEA-01
Catchments layer Canada

Description
This dataset was created by the Canadian BEACONs Project. Catchments represent
approximate drainage areas for individual stream arcs. The catchment dataset was created to serve as building blocks for the Benchmark Builder. They are the spatial units with which the Benchmark Builder constructs candidate ecological benchmarks.

Comments
Before using this dataset beyond its original purpose, ensure the catchments
represent the drainage areas best suited for the intended use. It may not be ideal.

HYDR-NRC-01
National Hydro Network (NHN)

Description
The National Hydro Network (NHN), for which the standards were officially adopted by the Canadian Council On Geomatics (CCOG) in August 2004, focuses on providing a quality geometric description and a set of basic attributes describing Canada’s inland surface waters. It provides geospatial digital data describing hydrographic features such as lakes, reservoirs, rivers, streams, canals, islands, obstacles (e.g. waterfalls, rapids, rocks in water) and constructions (e.g. dams, wharves, dikes), as well as a linear drainage network and the toponymic (geographical names) information associated to hydrography.
The NHN forms the hydrographic layer of the GeoBase at the national scale.
HN refers to hydro network features, HD refers to hydrographic features, HE refers to Hydro events and TO refers to toponymy.

Provided layers are:
WORKUNIT_LIMIT - Work unit limits -polygon
HN_BANK- Bank - line
HN_DELIMITER- Delimiter- line
HN_HYDROJUNCT - Hydro Junction - point
Littoral - line
HN_NLFLOW - Network Linear Flow - line
HD_OBSTACLE - Hydrographic Obstacle Entity - point, line, polygon
HD_ISLAND - Island - polygon
HD_MANMADE - Manmade Hydrographic Entity - point, line, polygon
HD_SLWATER -Single Line Watercourse - line
HD_WATERBODY - Waterbody - polygon
TO_NAMEDFEA - Named feature - point, line, polygon
OBSTACLEPT - Obstacle Point Event - N/A
HE_OBSTACLELN - Obstacle Line Event - N/A
HE_MANMADEPT - Manmade Point Event - N/A
HE_MANMADELN - Manmade Line Event - N/A
FLOWPROPLN - Flow Property Event - N/A
External Geometry Event - N/A
External Point Event - N/A
External Line Event - N/A

Comments
The NHN Work Unit Limit Index (NHN Index) provided by GEOBASE is not an official boundaries for watersheds or drainage areas. It is provided for information to delineate the territory covered by each NHN dataset.

CMIN-NCA-01
Monthly Palmer Drought Severity Index

Description
Measurement of dryness based on recent precipitation and temperature. It uses a 0 as normal. Drought is shown in terms of negative numbers and wet by positive numbers.
7 categories of wet and dry conditions are defined:

-4.0 or less (Extreme Drought)
-3.0 or -3.9 (Severe Drought)
-2.0 or -2.9 (Moderate Drought)
-1.9 to +1.9 (Near Normal)
+2.0 or +2.9 (Unusual Moist Spell)
+3.0 or +3.9 (Very Moist Spell)
+4.0 or above (Extremely Moist)

Comments
The index has proven most effective in determining long-term drought — a matter of several months — and not as good with conditions over a matter of weeks.

TEMP-NRC-01
Interpolated historical climate data processed for the Canada land mass - Mean daily maximum temperature

Description
The 1950 to 2006 temperature climate normals were calculated by Environment Canada in a manner consistent with the methodology of the World Meteorological Organization. For temperature, a monthly maximum average was computed from the daily maximum temperature observations. The normal is a simple arithmetic average of the monthly maximum temperatures for the specified period. These spatial models have been developed using the thin plate smoothing spline algorithms of ANUSPLIN, which is a mathematically sophisticated approach to generating climate maps at varying spatial and temporal scales. The Canadian Forest Service has been working in partnership with several staff in Environment Canada's Meteorological Service of Canada, the Australian National University (the creator of ANUSPLIN) and others to develop a variety of climate models that cover both Canada and North America.

LACO-NRC-01
Earth Observation for Sustainable Development of Forests (EOSD) - Land Cover Classification for Québec 2000

Description
A priority of the Canadian Forest Service and Canadian Space Agency joint project, Earth Observation for Sustainable Development of Forests (EOSD) is the production of a land cover map of the forested area of Canada. The land cover map will be based on Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) data and represent circa year 2000 conditions. Land cover will be produced through a partnership of federal, provincial, and territorial governments, universities and industry. Products generated will follow the 1:250,000 National Topographic Series Map Sheet tiles and naming convention. The land cover products are expected to be completed by early 2006.

EDEN-BEA-01
Boreal Lake-Edge Density for BEACONs

Description
This layer covers the boreal forest of Canada with a grid of 100-km2 cells. Each grid cell represents the lake-edge density for that cell reported as km/km2.

Comments
Some cells might not have the shape of a square since the layer was clipped with the zone representing the boreal forest after the computation was done. Many other cells were divided according to the Regional Planning Unit zones.

PROA-CEC-01
Terrestrial and Marine Protected Areas of North America, 2010

Description
This polygon data set includes the protected areas of North America that are managed by national, state, provincial, or territorial authorities. As defined by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a protected area is an “area of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means.” The data set was assembled from other public data sets containing data on protected areas in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Protected area data were obtained from Natural Resources Canada and the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks for areas in Canada; the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and the Nature Conservancy for areas in Mexico; and the Protected Areas Database (PAD-US Partnership) for areas in the United States.

LACO-NRC-02
NRCAN Land Cover Map of Canada 2005 at 250m V1 3

Description
Land Cover Map of Canada 2005 is a dataset produced by the Canadian Center for Remote Sensing under the ESS’s Program ‘Understanding Canada from Space’ (UCS). The UCS makes every effort to meet government, public, private, and educational needs for environmental information derived from satellite based EO data. The projects under UCS include development of a comprehensive versatile multi-scale national land cover\land use and change detection datasets. This dataset is produced to meet users need interested in environmental information at national and regional scales. The data collection encompasses land cover products at 250 m spatial resolution and the following thematic resolutions: 1) Land cover map with 12 IGBP land cover classes; 2) Land cover map with 39 land cover classes based on modified Federal Geographic Data Committee/Vegetation Classification Standard (FGDC NVCS) classification system; and 3) Cluster image with assigned thematic meaning to 90 spectral clusters for users who wish to perform labelling using a different classification system. Therefore, land cover datasets consist of land cover maps and a spectral cluster image, available in binary image and TIFF file format. Other land surface characterization data for use with this land cover dataset include a Water Fraction Map of Canada assembled from National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) NRCan/ESS/CTI, and a Digital Elevation Model assembled from Canada Digital Elevation Data, Level 1 (CDED1) NRCan/ESS/CTI.

BORE-BEA-01
Boreal Region of Canada

Description
The study area for the BEACONs Project is the boreal and taiga regions
of Canada as defined by the Boreal, Taiga, and Hudson Plain ecozones
(Marshall and Schut 1999).The Algonquin Lake - Nipissing ecoregion of
the Boreal Shield ecozone was removed from the study area because the
tree species of this ecoregion are predominantly non-boreal (e.g., sugar
and red maple, black ash, yellow birch, eastern hemlock, eastern white
pine, and beech).

LACO-DUC-01
Hydrid Wetland Layer

Description
The HWL classifies the Canadian land base into three general categories: Water, Wetland, and Upland. While the Upland category is further classified into several unique classes, all are symbolized as a single grey tone, as they are not the intended focus of this dataset. The HWL is derived from two national sources of data: Land Cover, Circa 2000 and CanVec. Land Cover information originates from classified Landsat 5 and Landsat 7 orthoimages, for agricultural and forest areas of Canada, and for Northern Territories. The forest cover was produced
by the Earth Observation for Sustainable Development (EOSD) project.
