THÈMES DE RECHERCHE
Mon programme de recherche axé au cours des dernières années sur l’identification moléculaire des champignons mycorhiziens arbusculaires (MA) (Sokolski et al. 2010 ; 2011) s’est réorienté vers la recherche d’une meilleure compréhension de l’altération microbienne des minéraux insolubles dans les sols agricoles et forestiers. Plus précisément, l’importance des gisements d’apatite dans les régions de Sept-îles et du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean nous font penser que l’apatite micronisée peut-être dissoute et mise à la disposition des plantes agricoles et celles des forêts d’érables par les champignons MA en tandem avec des bactéries du sol productrices d’acides organiques et de sidérophores. Pour ce qui est des plantes résineuses des grandes forêts du Nord, nous voulons démontrer que les champignons ectomycorhiziens, seuls ou en associations étroites avec des bactéries, sont très efficaces pour dissoudre l’apatite et l’orthoclase par la production de divers acides organiques. Enfin, nous devons valider le potentiel de l’apatite et de l’orthoclase comme sources de P, K et Ca pour améliorer la croissance des plantes porteuses de mycorhizes et de bactéries de la mycorhizosphère.
RÉALISATIONS RÉCENTES
La contribution des chercheurs du Centre de recherche en infectiologie (CRI) de l’Université Laval a été décisive pour mener à bien mon année sabbatique consacrée au diagnostic moléculaire des levures d’intérêt médical. Mes travaux au CRI ont conduit à une publication particulièrement utile pour identifier les levures pathogènes pour l’homme basée sur le séquençage de gènes essentiels au métabolisme cellulaire (Maheux et al., 2016). Cette étude m’a également servi à la mise au point d’un outil moléculaire pour identifier une vingtaine d’espèces de champignons MA grâce à la production de séquences d’ADN de gènes codants pour la biosynthèse de protéines essentielles (Sokolski et al., 2010 ; 2011). D’autres parts, les études de la doctorante Salma Taktek ont été déterminantes pour démontrer la capacité des bactéries du sol à produire des biofilms étroitement associés aux hyphes des champignons MA et à solubiliser l’apatite pour libérer les phosphates essentiels à la croissance des plantes mycorhizées (Taktek et al., 2015; 2016). Ces travaux ont été récompensés par l’attribution du prix Québec Science « Découverte de l’année 2015 » sous le titre « Vers une agriculture qui se passe d’engrais chimiques ». Sur la même lancée, Laurent Fontaine a montré à son tour la capacité des bactéries solubilisatrices de phosphates (BSP) associées cette fois-ci aux hyphes des champignons ectomycorhiziens à dégrader complètement les cristaux d’apatite en moins d’une journée (Fontaine et al., 2016). Avec cela, l’article de Fontaine et al. (2016) a reçu une attention spéciale de la part du rédacteur en chef Christian Lacroix de la revue « Botany » en mettant cet article en vedette sur la page d’accueil du périodique en février 2017. Finalement pour couronner le tout, le livre intitulé « Les mycorhizes : l’essor de la nouvelle révolution verte » par Fortin et al., (2016) vient d’être sélectionné en 2017 parmi les 15 meilleurs vendeurs de la maison d’édition scientifique et technique « Quae » de Versailles.
