Abstract

The relative importance of interception and transpiration changes causing watering-up after clearcutting was evaluated on four forested wetland sites (a gleyed mineral soil, a peaty gley soil, a fen and a bog) of the St Lawrence lowlands southwest of Québec city. Interception calculated from throughfall measurements using rain gutters ranged from 35% to 41% before logging and from 8% to 15% after clearcutting. The evaporation rates (ET) during rainless periods were calculated from water drawdown and estimated drainable porosity. The ratios (ET clearcut/ET forest) are usually smaller than 1.0 and increase, as would be expected, with the water table nearing the surface. The approach gives reasonable values of ET in absolute terms in the mineral-soil sites but appears to include large errors in the peat sites. On a seasonal basis, the reduction of interception is responsible for more than 50% of the watering-up. Thus, for hydrological considerations, it is recommended that regeneration and lesser vegetation should be protected, full tree harvesting avoided and logging debris left in the cutting area in order to maximize interception and evapotranspiration.
