Résumé
The objective of this project is to document nutritional and reproductive ecology, and life history of the fir coneworm, Dioryctria abietivorella (Grote). First, observations were recorded in order to obtain information on female host selection during oviposition. In the second part of this project, larvae were caged on white spruce, black spruce, and jack pine branches to identify tree species on which the fir coneworm performs best. Moreover, larvae were caged on branches with and without cones to verify the influence of flowering on development, growth, and insect survival. Another study was realized on winter biology of D. abietivorelia in order to document its life history. During immature development, insects were exposed to different photoperiod treatments the verity their possible effects on diapause induction. A study was also conducted on cold-hardiness in order to identify the overwintering stage(s) of the fir coneworm. Furthermore, physiological mechanisms implicated in D. abietivorella cold-hardiness were investigated in order to find out adaptations favoring winter survival. Finally, a precise identification method for the fir coneworm was developed during this project using genetic fingerprints.
