🔬 PhD RESEARCH SUBJECT
My PhD stubject concerns the effects of the so-called "uneven-aged" forest management on forest landscapes. Uneven-aged management is a type of forest management that tends to maintain a heterogeneous age structure within forest stands. To do this, it is possible to make repeated cuts within a forest stand, during which we will carefully choose part of the trees in the stand to be cut. Different studies have shown that this type of management could conserve a better supply of different ecosystem services (e.g. carbon storage, biodiversity, visual acceptability) than even-aged management. Meanwhile, Even-aged management (e.g. clearcuts), is more traditionally used in North America. It makes it possible to harvest more biomass per unit area than uneven-aged management. It is therefore important to know what the effects of uneven management may be, when it is used to replace even-aged management. However, looking at things at the stand level is not enough. In particular, it is at the scale of the landscape that other effects not visible at the scale of the settlement can appear and be taken into account. I am currently working on the comparison of the effects of even-aged and uneven-aged methods on the fragmentation and composition of landscapes. To do this, I work with the forest landscape simulation model LANDIS-II , for which I developed an extension allowing to dynamically simulate the construction of forest roads, the FRS module . Ultimately, my research will be able to explore other impacts of even-aged methods on forest landscapes, on carbon emissions (linked to the movement of workers and forestry equipment), and on various ecosystem services. |
