Résumé

It is recognized that the morphological characteristics of streams are shaped by the bank-full discharge, which has a return period of 1,5-2 years or more for very steep streams. Results from clear cutting 31% of a 394 ha basin in 1977 and 85% of a 122 ha basin in 1994 indicate that a 50-60% of the area must be clear cut before the occurrence of 50 % increase in peak flows. This increase is considered to significantly altered streambed morphology. This is corroborated by the literature when considering the conditions of the various experiments and peak flow with a return period of more than one year. In order to evaluate the cumulative effects of past cutting on peak flow, the rate of hydrologic recovery was obtained from peak flow measurements on a basin and from the snowmelt rate at various times during stands development. A 50% hydrologic recovery of measured rainfall peak flow was obtained when the trees reached 3 m in height. The decreasing snowmelt rate was used for a quick estimation of hydrologic recovery. It reached 50 % at tree high of 4 m. Theses levels of recovery corresponded respectively to tree covers of 30 and 50. These differences were not significantly different, enabling the use of the index based on snowmelt.
