Résumé

In exceeding water ecosystems like forested wetlands, the water table level is a limiting factor for tree growth. Forest harvesting on these sites may lead to an increase in water table level known as watering-up. This watering-up induces a decrease in productivity of the forest regeneration due to the lower aeration of the substrate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, during the period following harvesting, (1) the water table recovery and (2) the growth of balsam fir seedlings ( Abies balsamea L. Mill.) in link with the drainage and the competition for light. The water table level, the balsam fir growth and the competition for light have been evaluated at Saint-Gilles-de-Lotbinière during eleven years. The results showed that the watering-up following harvesting last for 3 years on organic sites and more than 10 years on mineral ones. Height increment of the seedlings was explained with the same variability by the average water table level during the growth season and by the frequency of the water table within 20 cm. Natural advance growth of balsam fir seems to be an appropriate way to regenerate forested wetlands after harvesting, since competing vegetation was no more a threat to seedlings ten years after the cut.
