THÈMES DE RECHERCHE

Je m'intéresse aux effets de la biodiversité sur l'environnement forestier, et à la place des arbres en milieu urbain et périurbain.

Mes travaux portent sur la relation entre la biodiversité et le fonctionnement des écosystèmes. Cette jeune science (BEF) prend racine dans les préoccupations pour la perte de biodiversité liée aux changements globaux, avec l'accumulation de preuves d'un impact généralement négatif sur les fonctions des écosystèmes. Toutefois, certains aspects restent encore mal compris ou explorées, parmi lesquels: • comment la biodiversité affecte la résilience des écosystèmes face à un stress? • quels sont les mécanismes expliquant les effets de biodiversité, à quels niveaux trophiques? • comment ces changements affectent les services écosystémiques qui touchent les gens; et comment les infrastructures vertes urbaines et leur diversité affectent notre santé et les services dont nous dépendons?

Mon modèle est typiquement la forêt et les systèmes arborés en raison de leur importance sur la terre (climat, biodiversité) et pour les humains (subsistance, services), et parce qu'ils sont encore mal documentés, en raison notamment de leur taille et longévité. J'utilise les forêts dans des études d'observation à l’aide d’inventaires (GFBi), ainsi que des expériences contrôlées (IDENT, TreeDivNet). J'étudie les systèmes d'arbres partout où ils sont, mais étant donné mon intérêt pour les services écosystémiques et le manque de documentation sur l'effet de la diversité dans et autour des villes (où la majorité des humains vivent maintenant), j’intègre de plus en plus les environnements et enjeux urbains et périurbains dans mes travaux.

La Chaire de recherche sur la forêt urbaine, dont je suis le titulaire, a pour mission d’étudier la forêt urbaine afin de l’adapter aux changements climatiques et d’en assurer la résilience. La Chaire a pour objectif de conscientiser la population à l’importance de la forêt urbaine et de la sensibiliser au fonctionnement des arbres en milieu urbain.
