CFR 3rd ANNUAL CONFERENCE

April 19th and 20th, 2009, Hilton Lac-Leamy Hotel, Gatineau, Québec

A word from our Director

This year's Annual Conference will be held at the same location and just prior to the final Celebration of the Sustainable Forest Management Network  (SFMN). The SFMN Celebration will gather the most important forestry actors in Canada (governments, industry, NGOs, academics, researchers, and students), making it an important and unique occasion for all CFR members to introduce themselves to the greater Canadian forestry community. Thus, I invite all CFR researchers and especially the students to attend these two joint events (CFR and SFMN). I also welcome student presenters, who are more at ease in giving their presentations in English, to do so (or at the least have their slides in English). Networking and encouraging links with our colleagues from other provinces represents an important CFR goal and the 3rd Annual Conference offers a great opportunity to do so. Hope to see you there! - Christian Messier

Keynote Speaker

The keynote speaker is Vic Adamowicz , Canada Research Chair (Environmental Economics), Associate Dean and Professor of forest economics in the Department of Rural Economy, University of Alberta. He has also received the Canadian Forestry Scientific Achievement Award from the Canadian Institute of Forestry in 2004.

Professor Adamowicz will talk about The Challenge of Biodiversity Conservation in Forests: Can Markets for Ecosystem Services Help? on monday April 20th at 3pm.

Abstract: An on-going debate in sustainable forest management is how much effort should be placed into biodiversity conservation relative to fibre production, resource extraction and other activities. This debate is illustrated by challenges in setting biodiversity targets, defining protected areas, developing action plans for threatened and endangered species, and other conservation problems. This presentation examines the issue in terms of our methods for evaluating trade offs and assessing values for biodiversity and related ecosystem goods and services. Increasingly markets for ecosystem services are being proposed as a solution to conservation challenges - their potential benefits and drawbacks will be examined.

A Green Event

In order to reduce our ecological footprint here are a few initiatives that will be taken:

  • Name tags will be reused from last year's event. We ask you to give your name tag back to the organizing committee at the end of the conference.
  • The Program will be available in pdf format online and will not be printed. You can choose to print those sections in which you have an interest.
  • A Share-a-Ride Bulletin Board is available online to reduce the number of cars going to Hull.

Program (full version with abstracts )

The conference will be held from Sunday April 19th (AM) to Monday April 20th (PM).
